Premier League Darts: Our four most memorable moments

Premier League Darts has had its fair share of memorable moments since the competition began in 2005.

From John Henderson’s incredible reception in Aberdeen to James Wade ending Phil Taylor’s 44-match unbeaten streak, there are too many amazing matches for us to include in a shortlist like this.

That’s why we’ve boiled it down to four, starting off with a historic performance from The Power in 2010.

Two nine-darters for Taylor

Now we don’t want to overstep the mark, but we reckon it’s fair to say Phil Taylor was quite good at Darts.

The Power had seemingly done it, won it and seen it all by this point in 2010. Yet nothing could prepare us for what he produced against James Wade on Finals Night as he made history with two nine-darters.

His first came in the second-leg of the match when he hit D18 to take out 147, with his second perfect game following 13 legs later with the tie finely poised at 7-7, this time courtesy of a sensational 141 finish.

He almost made it three nine-darters a few minutes later, only for his T17 attempt to drop below into the single bed. It was a truly incredible night of arrows with Taylor going on to win a third Premier League title.

Barney rocks Rotterdam

Raymond van Barneveld is a man who needs no introduction, but we’re going to give him one anyway.

The now-retired doyen of Dutch Darts is a five-time world champion who also won a pair of UK Open titles, the Grand Slam and the Premier League, which proved to be his last major trophy in 2014.

Not bad, huh? So for him to come out and say a 7-5 victory over compatriot Michael van Gerwen in Rotterdam back in 2018 is his career highlight, you get a real sense of how truly special this was.

Barney didn’t set the oche alight, averaging just 95.21 to MVG’s 103.73. But with the orange-clad crowd in full voice behind him, the Netherlands’ favourite son came through to secure a memorable win.

Van Gerwen whitewashes Taylor

The master versus the apprentice; it’s one of sport’s greatest and most familiar duels. Looking back, it’s fair to say this performance from van Gerwen was the night he truly asserted himself as the world number one.

Fresh from dethroning Taylor at the Alexandra Palace little over a month earlier, MVG confirmed his superiority over The Power with only the fourth Premier League whitewash in the tournament’s history.

The Green Machine dominated from start to finish, averaging 109.59 to Taylor’s 99.45 and showing no mercy on his doubles to leave his great rival in no doubt that a new era of Darts had begun.

Sherrock makes her debut

Since the ‘Challenger’ format was introduced in 2019 we’ve seen some memorable one-off matches.

And while the John Henderson is unlucky to miss out on our top-four with Aberdeen still shaking from his 6-6 draw against MVG in 2019, we couldn’t leave out the new first lady of Darts, Fallon Sherrock.

The Queen of the Palace enjoyed a stunning run to the last-32 of the World Championship and followed it up with a magnificent performance against Glen Durrant on her Premier League debut.

While Duzza missed 17 of his 23 darts at double, Sherrock retained her customary composure to go 6-4 ahead before being pegged back to 6-6 with both players forced to settle for a share of the spoils.
