Number of previous appearances: 4
Last appearance: 2011
Best finish: Super 8 (2007)
2014 ODI record: Played 18, Won 5, Lost 12, No Result 1
First 3 fixtures: Afghanistan, Australia, Sri Lanka
Coach: Chandika Hathurusingha
Squad: Al-Amin Hossain, Anamul Haque, Arafat Sunny, Mahmudullah, Mashrafe Mortaza (capt), Mominul Haque, Mushfiqur Rahim (wk), Nasir Hossain, Rubel Hossain, Sabbir Rahman, Shakib Al Hasan, Soumya Sarkar, Taijul Islam, Tamim Iqbal, Taskin Ahmed.
Top runscorer: Mushfiqur Rahim. As an international debutant all the way back in 2005, the former captain is one of the most experienced players in Bangladesh’s squad, but is the only member of the unit never to have played Test or ODI cricket in the World Cup’s host countries. Despite that drawback, Rahim has come of age as a batsman in the last 12 months and should take his 2014 form, where he scored 704 runs at an average of 44.00, into the tournament.
Top wicket taker: Al-Amin Hossain. Soon after bursting onto the scene with a string of handy performances for the Tigers, Hossain was reported to the ICC for a suspect action which, despite passing the test, threw him off kilter. Without that cloud hanging over him, expect his accuracy and dependence on stump-to-stump fast-medium bowling to choke opposition batsman, leading to their downfall.
Magic man: Taskin Ahmed. Along with Hossain, Taskin is part of a new crop of fast bowlers in Bangladesh, an area of cricket the country has been desperately lacking in during their brief history among the game’s elite. As the quickest of the four seamers in the squad, the 19-year-old is easily the most exciting. His raw pace will surprise more than a few batsman Down Under, as the 5-28 he took against India in his ODI debut last year proved.
Pre-tournament storyline: While the squad focus on the task at hand in Australia and New Zealand, it would be easy for one man, Rubel Hossain, to be distracted. He was only able to join up with the squad because a Dhaka court granted him bail just three days after he was detained for making false promises of marriage to a Bangladeshi actress in order, she claims, to have sex. Hossain denies any wrongdoing and has been granted bail until the police submit a chargesheet to the court.
