Having dragged the hosts to 221 all out in the first innings on Friday by contributing 64 runs despite being ninth in the batting order after his more illustrious team-mates had misfired, he performed even better on Saturday.
The Nottingham star excelled at his home ground Trent Bridge by claiming six wickets for just 46 runs, the highlight being a hat-trick at a point where India were threatening to run away with the victory at 267-4.
His feat of three wickets from three balls proved a complete momentum changer as India ended up going for 288, leaving England a far from disastrous 67 runs behind, though their second innings then got off to an unconvincing start.
England signed off day two on 24/1, Alastair Cook being an early victim, which is why India remain 8/11 favourites, however if the tail-enders like Broad and Graeme Swann are resolute when called upon again, the win is achievable.
The hosts must triumph by a margin of at least two in the four-test series to overtake their opponents as the top-ranked test team, meaning that they can afford no more than one defeat over the duration.
