With the January transfer window opening this week there’s already been significant activity involving Premier League clubs with one signing in particular causing a stir.

On the face of it Manchester United’s acquisition of ex-Barcelona goalkeeper Victor Valdes as back-up for David de Gea seems like smart business from manager Louis van Gaal.

However, the move has served to prompt plenty of speculation regarding the future of United’s current number one, with Real Madrid allegedly waiting to pounce.

We caught up with Ladbrokes ambassador Chris Kamara to get his views on the situation:

“There’s no doubt that David de Gea is the real deal now and I’m surprised that Manchester United haven’t tied him down to a new contract already, especially given the form that he’s in and the way the club usually handles its business”, Kammy said.

“When he first came to the Premier League he found it difficult to adapt but he’s gone on to establish himself as one of the best goalkeepers in the world and he will continue to do so. For me, De Gea is up there with Manuel Neuer and Thibaut Courtrois.”

De Gea currently has 18 months remaining on his Old Trafford contract and while a January switch seems unlikely at this stage, it hasn’t stopped the rumour mill from going into overdrive.

“Has De Gea decided he wants to move back to Spain or to another country? If he’s already made those decisions in his head then Man United need to act to fill that void and perhaps that’s part of the reason Victor Valdes has come in”, Kammy added.

“One thing is for sure though is that De Gea shouldn’t feel threatened by Valdes. Louis van Gaal is just acting to put measures in place that afford him quality back-up in the goalkeeping department and it’s a shrewd move.”

Van Gaal’s side face Southampton this weekend with the Red Devils 5/6 to bag all three points while the draw is priced at 13/5 and a Saints victory at 7/2 with Ladbrokes.
