Open to horses over 4, the race is the premier event for long distance specialists and the winner is presented a Gold Cup by Her Majesty the Queen.
Founded in 1807, the most successful horse at the Ascot Gold Cup is Yeats, who won the coveted prize 4 times in a row between 2006 and 2009. The Queen will undoubtedly be in attendance again this year, hoping for a repeat of 2013 when her own horse, Estimate took home the gold.

Ascot Gold Cup ones to watch
After winning the Ascot Gold Cup last year, Frankie Detorri has to be in the mix again this year. Despite being 48, the Italian legend is riding last year’s winner, Stradivarius and will hope to repeat. He’s ridden over 60 winners at Royal Ascot and is the most successful jockey in the field.
Stradivarius himself is another name to keep an eye on. Trained by John Gosden, he’s a brilliant stayer, going unbeaten in the 2018 season and has started this year on form with a classy run at York. Aidan O’Brien can’t be ignored at Royal Ascot.
