Ascot Gold Cup day tips

The Ascot Gold Cup is the gold standard of the Royal Ascot meeting. The Group 1 race attracts the best from around the world to compete over 2 miles and 4 furlongs for a share of £500,000. Open to horses over 4, the race is the premier event for long distance specialists and the winner is presented a Gold Cup by Her Majesty the Queen.

Founded in 1807, the most successful horse at the Ascot Gold Cup is Yeats, who won the coveted prize 4 times in a row between 2006 and 2009. The Queen will undoubtedly be in attendance again this year, hoping for a repeat of 2013 when her own horse, Estimate took home the gold.

Ascot Gold Cup trends

Aidan O’Brien is the master when it comes to the Ascot Gold Cup, but apart from backing any horse AOB has brushed, there are some interesting trends to keep an eye on at this year’s race.

Favourites tend to do well in the Gold Cup. Out of the last 17 races, the favourite has finished in the top 3, 13 times and won the race 9 times, so keep an eye on the Ascot Gold Cup odds.

If you’re looking for Ascot Gold Cup tips from past runs, you’ll want to find a runner that has previously won a long distance race on the flat. From the last 17 winners, 14 had won a race over 2 miles on the flat. Another of our Ascot Gold Cup tips is to consider a horse that hasn’t run much this season, 15 of the last 17 winners had no more than 2 runs in the season they won.

Ascot Gold Cup ones to watch

After winning the Ascot Gold Cup last year, Frankie Detorri has to be in the mix again this year. Despite being 48, the Italian legend is riding last year’s winner, Stradivarius and will hope to repeat. He’s ridden over 60 winners at Royal Ascot and is the most successful jockey in the field.

Stradivarius himself is another name to keep an eye on. Trained by John Gosden, he’s a brilliant stayer, going unbeaten in the 2018 season and has started this year on form with a classy run at York. Currently our Ascot Gold Cup odds have Stradivarius at evens and he is likely to be the favourite on Thursday.

Aidan O’Brien can’t be ignored at Royal Ascot. He’s been the leading trainer at the festival for the last 4 years and has plenty of runners that make him the odds-on favourite to be the top trainer for the fifth time in a row and tenth title overall. In the Ascot Gold Cup, O’Brien is represented by the last 2 winners of the St Leger, Capri (2017) and Kew Gardens (2018). The latter has been compared to the Gold Cup legend, Yeats and will hope to follow in his hoof-steps to Gold Cup glory.
