Grand National Tips: Three who could outrun their odds

The Grand National is finally upon us. But who out of the 40 runners and riders could outrun their odds at a big price when the showpiece gets underway at 5:15pm?

We’ve already given the entire seven-race card the once over, including our main Grand National pick. Here we identify three outsiders who could have place claims on each-way terms.

Ramses De Teillee

There’s plenty to like about Ramses De Teillee. David Pipe’s charge has been well-supported in the market all week and has a more than attractive weight of 10-9 to carry.

His form stands up to scrutiny too. The seven-year-old won a Welsh Grand National Trial in early-December before going on to finish runner-up to Elegant Escape in the real thing at Chepstow.

He then finished runner-up at Haydock in the Aintree Grand National Trial. The Martaline gelding jumps low, too, which shouldn’t be a problem over the modern National fences.

We think the David Noonan-piloted charge is still progressing and after a sterling campaign he has everything in his favour to top it off with a memorable win.

Ultragold

You have to respect any horse with a decent record over the National fences. And Ultragold has just that. Colin Tizzard’s charge has form figures of 1213 at this course.

That includes successive wins in the Topham Chase, so we know he’ll have no trouble with the obstacles on show here.

The only black mark against his name is his stamina. There’s no guarantee he’ll stay the 4m 2½f required to win the National, as his uncompleted spin in the Cross Country last month showed.

If his ability over these fences can carry him home, there’s every chance the 11-year-old can hit the frame for connections.

Walk In The Mill

There’s plenty to like about Walk In The Mill. The nine-year-old has been running well all season and excelled in December to finish in front over 3m 2f at Aintree.

He goes up 7lb for that win here but the impression he gave that day is that he should relish the step up to an extended trip.

Robert Walford’s enjoyed a nice spin around Exeter as a prep for this and with experience over the National fences he should possess the ability to go well.

As long as his jumping holds up the Walk In The Park gelding has every chance of hitting the frame at a double-figure price.
