ITV Racing Tips: Getaway Trump to make Kelso great again?

Published:
Kelso

The Cheltenham Festival is less than two weeks away but we’ve got an exciting seven-race card from Kelso, Doncaster and Newbury to tuck into first.

Festival contender Getaway Trump is the pick of the runners in the Edinburgh Gin Premier Kelso Novices’ Handicap, while Happy Diva and War Sound are the market leaders in the Greatwood Gold Cup.

It should be a cracking afternoon of racing on ITV4. And we’ve got selections for every race in our ITV Racing Tips

NAP – Getaway Trump – 3:15 Kelso

Getaway Trump holds entries for the Ballymore, Coral Cup and County Hurdle at Cheltenham. If he wins over 2m 2f at Kelso, expect him to shorten in the market for all of them.

There’s no question the six-year-old is the one to beat. Two wins at Plumpton and Exeter is decent form, but it’s his 2½l second behind Ballymore favourite Champ which stands out.

His staying-on-fourth in a deep race at Ascot is also a solid marker. The extra 2f afforded to the raider here should be right up his street as he bids to solidify his Festival credentials.

NB – Danse Idol – 3:00 Doncaster

Paul Nicholls and Danse Idol will breathe a sigh of relief at Doncaster. The Dansant mare has just been touched off behind the progressive Queenohearts in her last two starts at Listed and Grade 2 level.

Stuart Edmunds’s raider doesn’t reoppose at Donny, which means this looks like Danse Idol’s to lose. It’s not quite as simple as that, of course, but that respective form appears pretty solid.

Our pick has form in the book over 3m as a point-to-pointer, and should relish the step up from 2m 4f at Sandown last time out.

Rival Bonza Girl is looking for a six-timer but must deal with another hike from the handicapper, while Papaganda has been behind the selection twice before.

Lively Longshot – Dolos – 2:40 Newbury

It’d take a brave man to go against Nicholls in this race. The Ditcheat trainer has won the Greatwood Gold Cup in six of the last 10 years, including in 2012, 2013, 2015 and 2016.

He saddles three this time around, with preference for the six-year-old Dolos. The Kapgarde gelding is rarely out of the frame and got up to score by 4l in a toughie at Sandown last month.

That was run at a strong pace. If he gets similar conditions here, he could be difficult to stop up in trip under highly-rated 5lb claimer Lorcan Williams.
