Danger Men: Which Czech players could cause problems for England?

Published:
Tomas Kalas

England get started on the road to Euro 2020 at home to Czech Republic tomorrow evening.

We’ve got them as clear 2/7 favourites, but Gareth Southgate will want to make sure complacency doesn’t creep in. The visitors have won seven of their last 11 away games.

Before it gets started, we’ve picked out three players England will need to be wary of…

Patrik Schick

Schick tends to lead the line for his country. He has five goals in 14 international appearances, including three of the four Czech goals in the Nations League.

The Roma forward has been in and out of his club side this year, with Edin Dzeko firmly first-choice up front. When he does get on, he poses a real threat in the air and he’s got an eye for a pass too.

Jaroslav Silhavy’s side are likely to try and sit back at Wembley. A draw would be a great result for them, with Schick 5/1 to get on the scoresheet. He’ll need to hold up the ball whenever he gets it.

Matej Vydra

Vydra hasn’t seen much playing time for Burnley this season. He’ll be raring to go for this one.

He usually starts wide on the right for his country, where he can support Schick but also track back when needed.

Vydra has publicly claimed that Harry Maguire is England’s weak link. He’ll be looking to get in behind the Leicester man. There’s 13/2 about the forward getting on the scoresheet.

Tomas Kalas

Bristol City have the third-best defensive record in the Championship this season. Tomas Kalas has played a major role in their security at the back.

With the away side set to focus on keeping England out, the Chelsea loanee will have a big part to play at Wembley.

If it’s a tight game, Kalas’ ability to clear danger and read the game could keep the Three Lions at bay with Under 2.5 Goals going for 5/6. But if England can up the tempo, he’ll be in for a tough evening.
