Barcelona v Lyon tips: Can Barca avoid a shock early elimination?

Barcelona are the last Spanish side standing in this season’s Champions League and they’ll be hoping brush aside Lyon to book their place in the quarter-finals tonight.

After a surprise 0-0 stalemate in Lyon where Barca had 25 attempts, the Catalan side will be hoping their lack of an away goal won’t cause them too many problems.

Lyon will fancy their chances with this season’s competition already being blown wide open by other results. Can they cause another upset? Here’s everything you need to know ahead to kick off…

Match odds

Barcelona have the home advantage and are unbeaten at the Camp Nou since mid-November. In the three previous Champions League matches at home this season, they’re unbeaten, winning twice and drawing against Spurs.

Unsurprisingly, the Catalan giants are favourites to pick up the win and progress. They’re 2/9 with our traders.

Lyon may be underdogs, but they’re also unbeaten in this season’s competition. They’ve drawn their last six European matches. On gameweek one, they shocked Man City by beating them 2-1 at the Etihad.

They sit 11/1 outsiders to win, but a score draw would be enough for them to progress. A Draw with Both Teams to Score is 13/2.

Talking tactics

Barca will be without Ousmane Dembele who has suffered a hamstring strain, though they’ve got a few options to choose from to fill his role.

Philippe Coutinho has been jeered by the home support recently, but he’s got more than enough quality to step in for Dembele. Malcom is also an option and could be better suited to the right-wing.

Thomas Vermaelen also remains sidelined with a thigh injury.

Lyon will be boosted by the return of their star man Nabil Fekir. He was instrumental in their win over Man City earlier in the season, and could put in a performance at the highest level to show what he’s all about.

Maxwel Cornet was incredibly impressive in the City game, as is joint top scorer for the French side in the Champions League with Fekir. He could be key on the counter for Lyon if they’re to get anything from the game.

Goalscorer odds

Lionel Messi has been Barca’s star man for years, and unsurprising he’s favourite to open the scoring in the tie at 15/8. As an anytime scorer, he’s priced at 4/11 to add to his 34 goals this season, six of which have come in the Champions League.

Luis Suarez hasn’t scored in Europe this season, but what better time to grab his first. He’s 3/1 to break the deadlock, or 3/4 anytime.

Could Coutinho silence his haters? He’s 7/4 to score anytime.

Cornet and Fekir both have three in Europe this campaign. They’re Lyon’s best chance of a breakthrough.

Fekir is 12/1 to score first and 13/2 anytime to add to his tally. Cornet is further out at 18/1 to bag the game’s first goal, or 5/1 to score at Camp Nou.
