Valentine’s Day XI: Who makes our most romantic football team?

| 14.02.2019

It’s 14th February, which can mean only one thing. It’s Kevin Keegan’s birthday. Many happy returns, King Kev.

Okay, two things. It’s also a little-known holiday called Valentine’s Day. And to get into the mood, we’ve been busy drafting up a lovestruck XI.

GK: Tim Flowers

Everything’s coming up roses for the former England stopper as manager of National League side Solihull Moors. They’re one of several sides battling for promotion to the EFL.

LB: Ian Heart

A Leeds United legend, the Irish defender played almost 300 games for the Elland Road club. He’s also perhaps the only man ever to play for both Levante and Carlisle United.

CB: Zander Diamond

Right now, the defender is without a club – presumably waiting for someone to give him a ring. But he shone bright at centre-back for the likes of Aberdeen and Northampton Town.

CB: Dejan Love-ren

Liverpool fans have something of a love-hate relationship with the unpredictable centre-back. But he’s found a happy home in our starting XI.

RB: James Dayton

Sounds like dating, right? Right?

Anyway, he’s currently paired up with Leyton Orient, following flings at Kilmarnock, St Mirren and Cheltenham Town.

LM: James Husband

The Fleetwood Town ace is not the most affectionate with opposing players – racking up six bookings already this season. But the Cod Army faithful have taken the tough-tackler to their hearts.

CM: Tom Cuddlestone

Fitting snugly into Frank Lampard’s new-look Derby County side, Huddlestone and the Rams seem to be a match made in heaven.

CM: Filip Kiss

Ross County fans would surely have been ready to smooch with the Czech ace when he netted against fierce Highland rivals. Inverness Caledonian Thistle in 2014. He’s now on the books of Saudi side Al-Ettifaq.

RM: Alexander Ring

Wearing the armband for MLS outfit New York City, the fiery Finn has already collected 60 bookings at club level and two red cards for his national side. He’s certainly passionate about the game.

CF: Vagner Love

True to his name, the amorous Brazilian made as many headlines with his off-field antics as he did on the football pitch. Still, he scored regularly during his seven years with CSKA Moscow. Make of that what you will…

CF: Weddin Dzeko

It was between the Roma ace and Liverpool icon Ian Crush for the final spot, but the Bosnian just about snatches it.

Part of the Manchester City side who ended the club’s 44-year wait for a league title in 2012, he surely got a few offers to tie the knot from besotted Mancunians.

Manager: Paul Jewell

It was love at first sight for Wigan Athletic fans when the bubbly Scouser took charge, leading the club to their first ever taste of top-flight football. We reckon he’d do a fine job with this group of gems.
