PL Darts tips: Barney army to be singing in Exeter?

Raymond van Barneveld

The 2019 Premier League Darts season races on to Exeter on Thursday night, for week four of the competition.

Michael van Gerwen is starting to run away with things at the top of the table. The reigning world champion is the only player to win all of his matches so far.

He takes on James Wade in Devon, while this week’s guest star is up-and-coming arrowsmith Luke Humphries, who opens proceedings against Gerwyn Price.

We’ve got previews for both of those, and all of this week’s games right here…

Gerwyn Price to beat Luke Humphries

Gerwyn Price is one of only three players still unbeaten in the Premier League, after a win and two draws.

The Welshman has been impressive thus far, and will fancy his chances of another two points as 8/11 favourite to down debutant Humphries.

But Cool Hand Luke produced a walloping 6-1 win when the pair met for the first time at the German Grand Prix last year. He’s 5/2 to win the match, with 10/3 about a draw.

The 180-bed should be in trouble from the off in Exeter. Price is averaging four maximums per week, and there’s Evens about 5.5 180s thrown between this pair.

Daryl Gurney v Rob Cross – Draw

Match two should be an intriguing encounter. Daryl Gurney has won two of his opening three matches, while Rob Cross has won one, drawn one and lost one.

Superchin hasn’t thrown sensational arrows yet – he’s bottom of the 180 pile and third bottom for checkout percentage – but he’s getting the job done and that’s what counts.

We all know what Cross is capable of, but he remains somewhat inconsistent. This should be close and a draw can’t be ruled out at 3/1. Cross is favourite at 6/5, with Gurney at 13/8.

Gurney’s lack of maximums so far has us leaning towards under 6.5 180s at 4/6 while over 11.5 legs can be backed at Evens.

Mensur Suljovic v Peter Wright – Draw

It’s only week four, but Mensur Suljovic could do with picking up a win or two soon. The Gentle has been playing well, but just can’t quite grind out that all-important win.

He’s 6/4 to break his 2019 duck against Peter Wright. But Snakebite is unbeaten so far, and is 13/10 to prevail.

But results between this pair have frequently been close ,and our traders are 3/1 about the draw.

Michael van Gerwen to beat James Wade

James Wade has enjoyed a fine campaign so far, but the Machine might be brought to a halt against Michael van Gerwen.

Mighty Mike has been untouchable in the tournament, and has won a staggering 16 of his last 17 meetings with Wade. Each of those has been by two legs or more, too.

MVG is 2/7 to win the match, while Wade’s remarkable 47% checkout rate should keep him within striking distance. There’s 9/2 about Van Gerwen taking this one 7-4.

And with 22 maximums between them already in this year’s Premier League, the treble-20 bed could take a hammering here. 6/5 says we get more than 6.5 180s.

Raymond van Barneveld to beat Michael Smith

Three players have yet to land a win this season, and two of them are Michael Smith and Raymond van Barneveld.

Bully Boy is struggling to find that Ally Pally form, and sits bottom of the pack with one point, while Barney has shown plenty of experienced nous to grab a pair of draws so far.

This one could genuinely go either-way, which makes Barney stand out at 11/4, with Smith the 8/11 favourite.

But Smith should comfortably win the maximum contest. He’s hit 12 already and is 8/15 to land more 180s than his Dutch opponent.
