England v France tips: Can Red Rose build on Irish win?

After a sensational victory in Dublin last weekend, England host France on Sunday hoping to maintain their quest for Six Nations glory.

Eddie Jones’ men were excellent in both attack and defence to beat pre-tournament favourites Ireland 32-20 on their own patch.

Now they look to make it two wins on the spin against a France side which capitulated at home to Wales last Friday. It’s all live on ITV, with kick-off at 3pm…

Match odds

France don’t much enjoy their visits to Twickenham. They’ve won only twice at the home of rugby since the turn of the century, and haven’t won at all since a 2007 Rugby World Cup warm-up clash.

Defeat to Wales last week also means the French have won just one of their last eight matches, while England are seeking a fourth win in succession.

So it’s not surprising to see the hosts chalked up as 1/7 favourites. Les Bleus are 9/2 outsiders, with a draw always unlikely but not impossible at 33s.

Key players

There was plenty of talk around Jonny May’s potential impact for this Six Nations tournament, and a stirring performance against the Irish suggested the winger is ready to make his mark.

He put England ahead inside two minutes in Dublin, and will be poised to punish any French errors on Sunday.

The visitors will also have to be on their guard for Henry Slade, who was also in fine form with two tries last weekend. Then there’s the return of Chris Ashton, who is set to make his first Six Nations start for six years.

But France aren’t without hope. They were excellent in the first half versus Wales, racking up a 16-0 lead at half-time.  They’ll need Louis Picamoles and Yoann Huget to be at their best.

There will be one notable absence for England however, which the French may try to capitalise on. 6ft 5in man mountain Maro Itoje will miss this and the Wales game with injury.

Points and try scorers

May didn’t hang around in Dublin, and he heads up the first tryscorer betting here at 5/1. He tops the betting alongside Ashton.

There’ll be plenty of eyes on Slade too after his double tryscoring performance last weekend. The Exeter Chiefs ace is 14/1 to open the scoring.

As for France, Gael Fickou is deemed their most likely tryscorer at 14/1.

You can get England to win by a 1-10 point margin at 11/5, with 9/4 about Jones’ men prevailing by 11-20 points.
