Striking back: Who could Chelsea sign to end their goalscoring woes?

Published:

Chelsea’s 1-0 loss to Tottenham Hotspur in the first-leg of their Carabao Cup semi-final proved three things.

Eden Hazard is a joke of a player. Their defence is mostly a solid unit. But the need for a potent forward is getting desperate.

Olivier Giroud is still the Plan B he was at Arsenal, whilst Alvaro Morata could be on his way to Sevilla.

So we put our heads together to come up with five names that could become the Chelsea fans new hero in 2019.

Edinson Cavani

The Uruguayan often divides opinion in the football world. But his 126 goals in 175 appearances for Paris Saint-Germain points to a cold-blooded killer in front of goal.

But with Thomas Tuchel now starting to put his own stamp on the PSG side, Cavani could soon find his himself out the door.

The 31-year-old may come at a premium this month, after the Parisian’s allowed Timothy Weah to leave on loan to Celtic.

But Cavani could push for a move to Stamford Bridge to form a Napoleon connection with Maurizio Sarri and Jorginho.

Gonzalo Higuain

This one could be the most likely to happen, as Sarri hopes to bring in his former striker at Napoli.

Under Sarri’s wing, Higuain banged 36 goals in 35 league games in the 2015-16 season.

He fell out of favour at Juventus in the summer after the arrival of Cristiano Ronaldo and hasn’t exactly ripped it up for AC Milan this season.

But if anyone can get the best out of Pipita then it’s Sarri.

Callum Wilson

Who would have thought this guy would be on this list 12 months ago?!

After suffering two anterior cruciate ligament injuries in both knees since 2014, just being able to get on the pitch would be enough for some.

But fast forward to 2019 and the 26-year-old has nine goals in 16 appearances this season and bagged a full England cap!

Chelsea are Evens to get their man and are reportedly prepared to spend up to £50 million to do so.

Talk about comeback season…

Karim Benzema

If the Blues end up losing arguably their brightest prospect in Callum Hudson-Odoi, then Benzema could be the signing of intent they need.

The Real Madrid man is not having the best of seasons, which is helped by the injuries to Gareth Bale at the Bernabeu.

But at 31-years-old this could be last chance to play in the Premier League.

He showed in the last year’s Champions League win he can still come up with vital goals.

That is something Chelsea need right here, right now.

Josef Martinez

This may be a long shot, but Martinez is as potent as it comes across the global game.

The Atlanta United striker hit a mental 31 goals in 34 MLS games last season on his way to winning the league’s MVP and Golden Boot trophies as well as the MLS Cup.

Frank De Boer will be desperate to convince his man to stay, but the vultures are circling and it’s begging for someone to steal a march.

His best mate and fellow Atlanta man Miguel Almiron could be set for a move to the Prem.

Martinez might not be far behind.
