Blackburn v Newcastle tips: Can Toon avoid cup upset at Ewood?

Rafa Benitez

FA Cup replays take centre-stage tonight, with the TV action coming from Lancashire as Blackburn Rovers host Newcastle United.

The pair played out a 1-1 draw at St James’ Park 10 days ago. On home soil, can Championship outfit Rovers claim an upset or will Rafa Benitez’s Magpies assert their Premier League authority?

The winner goes on to host Watford in the fourth round. Here’s everything you need to know for tonight’s clash…

Match odds

Blackburn are unbeaten in their last three versus the Toon Army and they went seven without defeat against the Geordie side between 2007 and 2011. Our traders make Rovers 7/5 favourites to win tonight inside 90 minutes.

But Benitez’s Newcastle have only lost two of their last 12 FA Cup games versus Rovers, and their hosts have lost their last three FA Cup ties against Premier League opponents. There’s 2/1 about the Magpies to win in normal time.

A draw can be backed at 21/10, with 10/1 apiece on either side to go through via penalties.

Talking tactics

Blackburn boss Tony Mowbray has gone with a 4-2-3-1 this season, and it’s been a success more often than not.

Joe Nuttall and Danny Graham are vying for the striker role this evening. We’re leaning towards the latter, who started at St James’ Park.

Bradley Dack is the key for Rovers however. The 24-year-old attacking midfielder has directly contributed to 20 goals this season and should start in the middle of the supporting three.

Benitez might change things up for Newcastle. The pragmatic Spaniard has largely opted for defensive line-ups in the Premier League, but went 4-2-3-1 for the original cup tie 10 days ago.

Joselu started that game up front, with Salomon Rondon rested and the Spaniard, who has barely featured in the league, looks set for a starting berth once again.

Goalscorer odds

Rondon heads up the first goalscorer betting at 9/2, but if as expected, he is again rested, then Dack – who scored first in the original meeting, Graham and Joselu are each up next at 4/1.

There’s 9/5 about Dack anytime, while Joselu is 17/10 for his third of the season at any point.
