Saturday sees a huge night of boxing in Manchester with Josh Warrington’s title defence against Carl Frampton topping the billing.
The IBF Featherweight champion puts his belt on the line for the first time against comeback kid Frampton.
It’s shaping up to be a great night of boxing. And we had a chat with our Boxing trader Tommy Young to get his expert insight ahead of the action.
Ladbrokes News: Hey Tommy, what are your thoughts on Warrington’s year so far?
Tommy Young: Warrington really came of age in the Lee Selby fight. There had been question marks around him after a poor performance against Kiko Martinez.
That was a fight he arguably lost and people began to doubt if he was as good as we thought or if he was overhyped.
Since then he has turned it around, after stopping the solid Dennis Ceylan he put in a career best performance vs Selby to take the title.
LN: And what about Frampton? What are his chances on Saturday?
TY: Frampton has the better names on his resume with the excellent performance when he beat Leo Santa Cruz in Brooklyn really standing out.
If he fights like he fought that night against Warrington he will win and that’s why he’s the favourite.
The problem is that was over two years ago and since then he hasn’t fought at close to that level.
He looked better last time against Luke Jackson but he is nowhere near as good as Warrington.
LN: So how do you see this one panning out?
TY: Frampton is the 4/9 favourite for this fight and Warrington is 7/4.
But Warrington was the betting underdog going into the Selby fight and he totally dominated the bout.
Regardless of what the close scorecards say, his stock has never been higher coming into this match-up which will be the toughest challenge of his career so far.
LN: All being said, how are calling it on Saturday night?
TY: Warrington fought with relentless pressure against Selby and I think he will apply the same pressure to Frampton on Saturday night.
The Jackall will struggle to use his superior boxing ability to win rounds. In fact I can even see Warrington grinding Frampton down and stopping him late.
