Celtic v RB Salzburg tips: Can Bhoys reach the knockout stages?

Published:
Brendan Rodgers - Celtic

Brendan Rodgers’ Celtic require only a point tonight to reach the knockout stages of the Europa League.

The Bhoys are at home to a Red Bull Salzburg side who have won all five of their group games. That includes a 3-1 success over Celtic in Austria.

But it also means they have already secured top spot in Group B. So they may rest players tonight.

RB Leipzig would leapfrog Celtic if they can beat Rosenborg and the Scottish side lose, but a weakened Salzburg with nothing to play for could be there for the taking.

Match odds

Celtic go into this one unbeaten in 10 games. They’ve won eight of those, scoring five goals or more on three occasions. That includes a blistering display in Saturday’s 5-1 win over Kilmarnock.

So they’ll be fully confident of a home win at 31/20 tonight, with Salzburg rated 17/10. A draw, which would also be good enough for Rodgers’ side, is 23/10.

Talking tactics

It’s a bit of a funny game this. Salzburg have nothing riding on it, and Celtic only need a draw. But Rodgers’ is unlikely to risk settling for a point.

The Celtic boss has gone 4-1-4-1 in his last two home games, but he’s also gone 4-2-3-1 in his two Europa League home games.

But whichever formation he chooses, Odsonne Edouard will be the focal point up front, with Scott Sinclair and James Forrest providing width and energy on the flanks.

Goalscorer odds

Edouard opened the scoring inside two minutes in the reverse tie in Austria. The 20-year-old is 5/1 to break the deadlock once more and 7/4 anytime.

But it was Forrest who scored first against Killie on Saturday. The 27-year-old is enjoying another excellent campaign, and he’s 9/1 first goalscorer and 3/1 anytime.
