The odds are in following Martin O’Neill’s departure as Republic of Ireland boss. And there’s a familiar face installed as odds-on favourite to replace him: Mick McCarthy.

Big Mick is the 8/13 favourite to return to the Ireland dugout, having led the Boys in Green to World Cup 2002 during his previous six-year stint in the job.

He’s followed in the betting by long-time Dundalk gaffer Stephen Kenny at odds of 3/1.

There’s a big gap after that, before 10/1 pair Sam Allardyce and Steve Bruce. Meanwhile, Wigan Athletic boss Paul Cook is 12s to take his first step into international management.

As for O’Neill’s Ireland assistant Roy Keane, the former Ipswich Town manager is out at 16s to step up to the top job.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It looks as though ROI chiefs will turn to a familiar face in McCarthy when it comes to O’Neill’s replacement.”
