Lyon v Man City tips: Citizens out to secure qualification

Guardiola Man City

Manchester City head to Lyon tonight, needing just a point to secure progression into the knockout stages of the Champions League.

A sublime display of counter-attacking football saw the French side win 2-1 at the Etihad in September. But that remains the only defeat for Pep Guardiola’s men this season.

And having won their last eight games in all competitions by an aggregate score of 29-2, the Premier League outfit are in remarkable form for this hop across the channel. Here’s your one-stop match preview…

Match Odds

City’s current form is supported in the odds. They’re 2/5 for victory tonight. A win would see them secure top spot in Group F.

Lyon are unbeaten in seven since a 5-0 hammering at Paris Saint-Germain last month, but they’re 11/2 outsiders tonight.

City do have a number of injuries, however, and there’s 19/5 about a draw tonight.

Talking Tactics

Guardiola is without Bernardo Silva, Ilkay Gundogan, Gabriel Jesus and Kevin de Bruyne, so Phil Foden may get a start this evening.

Benjamin Mendy is also still absent, so Fabian Delph is again likely to deputise at left-back.  Leroy Sane could start ahead of Riyad Mahrez too on the left flank after his brace against West Ham United on Saturday.

As ever, we’ll see City dominate possession tonight.  Despite being at home, Lyon’s best shot is to counter, as they did at the Etihad. They had only 30% possession in that 2-1 win.

If they’re to trouble Guardiola’s men again, it will need big performances from Memphis Depay, Nabil Fekir and Moussa Dembele.

Goalscorer Odds

With Jesus out, Aguero is the 3/1 favourite to open the scoring.  There’s 4/1 about Sterling netting the opener, while David Silva – who scored first at the weekend – is 15/2 to do so again.

Maxwel Cornet put Lyon ahead in the reverse tie, and is 14/1 to break the deadlock this evening, but it’s Nabil Fekir who heads the hosts’ first goalscorer odds at 11/1.

And having netted one Champions League goal already this season, Aymeric Laporte is 17/2 to grab another at any time.
