Denmark v R. Ireland Tips: Danes to edge tight Nations League tie?
Republic of Ireland will be looking to salvage some pride from their inaugural Nations League campaign when they face Denmark tonight.
Martin O’Neill’s side are already relegated from Group B4 and face a difficult task against the Danes, who are guaranteed top spot.
Can the Irish end a five-match winless run in Aarhus? Or will they fall to their fifth defeat of the calendar year?
Denmark have won two of their three Nations League matches so far. They’re odds-on favourites at 6/10 to extend that sequence and their advantage at the top of the table.
With both of those previous stalemates ending 0-0, we also go 6/1 about a repeat scoreline here.
Irish fans know what they’re getting under O’Neill. And it’s not usually pretty. The Green Army will pack the midfield once again in an attempt to soak up pressure and play on the counter.
Conor Hourihane should earn a recall in place of the injured Glenn Whelan. He’ll sit alongside Jeff Hendrick and Robbie Brady in a midfield three, complemented by two wing-backs.
Seamus Coleman’s international return at least gives the Irish an outlet on the right. He’ll look to feed likely forward duo Callum Robinson and Scott Hogan.
The Danes could rest a number of key players after securing promotion last week. That could mean starts for Andreas Cornelius and Martin Braithwaite amongst others.
Christian Eriksen is the obvious danger if he starts. The Tottenham Hotspur man netted a hat-trick against Ireland in last year’s World Cup Play-Off.
Eriksen’s inclusion isn’t guaranteed. But he’s a 19/10 shot to score anytime should he feature.
Ireland’s general lack of possession under O’Neill is part way to blame for their record of five goals in their last nine international matches.
Two of those have been scored by defenders, which leads us towards Brighton & Hove Albion man Shane Duffy at 12/1.
Robinson and Hogan are 7/2 apiece to break their respective international ducks.
Where: Ceres Park, Aarhus.
