Weekend Reaction: What next for Khabib and McGregor?

The dust has settled on another jam-packed weekend of sport.

The Premier League had to share the limelight with the return to UFC for Conor McGregor and Lewis Hamilton cruising towards a fifth Formula 1 title.

Khabib v McGregor descends into chaos

If you went to sleep early on Saturday evening then you missed a whirlwind night at UFC 229.

Khabib Nurmagomedov choked out Conor McGregor in the fourth round, making the Notorious tap out.

However, after an impressive display from the Russian in the main event, things turned sour.

Khabib tarnished his performance when he jumped the octagon and threw punches at McGregor’s team.

On a night where the fight became the most-watched pay-per view in the company’s history. The scenes resembled a flat-out street fight!

McGregor tweeted he was ‘looking forward to a rematch’. There’s many asking for him to call it a day but we could yet, scarily, see these two do battle again!

Manchester City and Liverpool cancel each other out

After last season’s heavyweight duel’s between the pair saw, a 5-1, a 4-3 and a Champions League double header, this was never going to finish 0-0 right?! Think again.

Jurgen Klopp brought in Dejan Lovren for the attacking full-back Trent Alexander-Arnold. Joe Gomez reverted to right-back as Klopp believed this would nullify Leroy Sane.

But the flying German winger was left on the bench. Pep Guardiola elected for Riyad Mahrez, which would pose a different threat to the pacy Raheem Sterling on the other wing.

The two teams seemed to cancel each other out, no-one was brave enough to move that pawn and risk a checkmate.

Going into the end game in the final ten minutes, Liverpool appeared to blink first. A Manchester City penalty to win it.

Mahrez stuck the ball into row Z. The game ending in stalemate, allowing Chelsea to make ground.

Lewis Hamilton is a Mercedes one-two away from the Championship

Lewis Hamilton eased to a fifth win in six races at Suzuka as he watched the chaos unfold behind him.

The four time world-champion is on the cusp of powering to a fifth title in Austin, USA.

If Mercedes yet again finish 1-2 in the U.S then Hamilton will be celebrating a second-straight Drivers’ Championship. He only needs eight points more than Sebastian Vettel.

His nearest challenger Vettel is now a massive 67 points adrift.

The Ferrari driver was too anxious when overtaking rival Max Verstappen before spiralling off the track and with it any hope of a podium finish evaporated.

When Hamilton does secure the win, it would move him above Vettel and Alain Prost and up alongside Juan Manuel Fangio with five.

With all the attention at the top of the Premier League happening in the north-west, Arsenal’s impressive run has flown under the radar.

Their 5-1 away win at Fulham means they go into the international break on the back of nine-straight victories in all competitions.

However, it’s the form of Alex Lacazette and Pierre-Emerick Aubameyang that should get the fans purring.

Free from injury, Lacazette is quite frankly on fire this campaign. The Frenchman has plundered four goals in the league so far and is 12/1 to be the league’s top marksman.

He is joined on four by Aubameyang and the pair have struck up a prolific partnership.

Many doubted if they could play together, but they’re good relationship off the pitch has meant it’s been a seamless transition on the pitch.
