An eleventh hour gamble is developing on Daisy Johnson winning the 2018 Man Booker Prize ahead of Tuesday’s announcement.

The 27-year-old, who is the youngest author ever to be nominated for the award, has been backed into 9/2 third-favourite over the weekend.

Richard Powers is the favourite with odds of 5/2, followed by Esi Edugyan at 7/2.

The Long Take is rated as a 5/1 chance to land the accolade for Robin Robertson, while Anna Burns (6/1) and Rachel Kushner (7/1) complete the field.

Jessica Bridge of Ladbrokes said: “Literary punters’ late cash suggests there could be an upset this year, and it looks like Johnson is the one to cause it.”
