How QPR can turn their Championship season around

Published:

Queens Park Rangers have had a dismal start to the campaign, losing their first three games on the spin.

It wasn’t that long ago that Bobby Zamora fired the club back into the Premier League in 2014, making it three seasons in four years where they were in the top flight.

They picked up a win a valuable win at home to Wigan before the transfer deadline having bagged two new strikers.

QPR are 25/1 to finish in the top six, but Steve McClaren has said the international break has come at the perfect time for his side.

We take a look at how they could turn it all around…

New structure at the top

Chairman Tony Fernandes stepped aside in August after seven years at the helm of the West Londoners.

Former vice-chairman Amit Bhatia will step into the role, with the departing Fernandes saying after a tumultuous few years it was ‘a good time for a change’.

Bhatia comes in with many of the FFP issues solved, but charged with keeping the club sustainable and building a strong academy and backroom team.

Proven Championship goal scorers

QPR were able to get in two proven Championship strikers in the dying embers of the transfer window.

The signing of Tomer Hemed already looks inspired. The Brighton loanee notched the only goal in the win over Wigan.

In two seasons in the second-tier he plundered 28 goals and was a big part of the Seagulls promotion party in 2017.

The R’s also swooped for Nahki Wells. The former Huddersfield forward notched 27 goals in the two seasons between 2015 and 2017, proving his potency at Championship level.

Manager has the track record

McClaren has been vocal in his insistence that the side will finally show their true colours after the international break.

The former England boss knows what it takes to get a club into the upper reaches of this league.

His Derby County side went within a game of the Premier League in 2014, but fell, ironically to a Zamora’s play-off winner for QPR.

McLaren will believe he can still turn the season around at Loftus Road, and four points from the last two games is signs of a fresh start.
