Golovkin v Canelo tips: Can GGG get the job done this time?

Almost 12 months to the day since their controversial draw, Gennady Golovkin and Saul ‘Canelo’ Alvarez are set to square up again in Las Vegas.

The first bout sparked uproar. Many felt Golovkin edged a close contest and deserved the win, but the judges split the fight across the board. Adalaide Byrd courted particular attention after going 118-110 in Alvarez’s favour.

The statistics showed GGG landed far more punches, but Canelo was more accurate.

A scheduled May rematch was then postponed to September, after Canelo tested positive for a banned substance in February. But now, finally, it’s time for what could be the fight of 2018.

Fight odds

Golovkin was 4/6 favourite last year, and the Kazakhstani is odds-on again this time around at 8/11. Alvarez is the 11/8 outsider, with 20/1 about another draw.

That draw with Saul ended GGG’s perfect record, which then stood at 37-0.

It’s now 38-0-1 after he knocked out Vanes Martirosyan inside two rounds in May, after the initial Canelo rematch was cancelled.

Alvarez hasn’t fought since taking on GGG last September, so his record remains 49-1-2.

Alternative odds

There’s no reason this shouldn’t be another brilliantly close battle in the ring.

Golovkin is favourite again, but he’s also 36-years-old now. Has he still got his legendary power?

If he has then he should have the edge again, but if not, could that let Canelo in at the second time of asking?

We’re 15/8 about GGG to win by KO, TKO or DQ, while 11/5 says the Kazakh fighter takes it by Decision or Technical Decision.

The Mexican is 7/1 KO, TKO or DQ, and 2/1 Decision or Technical Decision.

Will it go to the judges again? Golovkin will be hoping it doesn’t.

Should it end that way however, there’s 3/1 about GGG to win via Unanimous Decision, 14/1 over a split, and 18s via Majority.
