Stephen McGinn: St Mirren need to be more patient in the Premiership

St Mirren are back in the Ladbrokes Premiership after three years away, having breezed to the Championship title last term.
But Buddies captain Stephen McGinn isn’t getting carried away – with survival the main issue on his mind.
The 29-year-old told us: “I have been a St Mirren player in the Premiership before and although it may sound negative the object is to stay in the league and achieve safety as early as we can.”
The pragmatic captain explained: “We know we might not have the same number of winning runs and success as we had last year but we want to carry the momentum as long as possible.”
“We know we can’t play the same way as last season when we tried to score every time we had the ball. If we do that in this league teams could hurt us.
“We will need to be more patient, keep the ball longer and limit our mistakes.”
It’s been all change in Paisley this summer, with new boss Alan Stubbs having replaced Jack Ross.
And McGinn is hoping the new boss can bring in some fresh blood, saying: “There was always going to be a necessity to bring in higher quality players. We’ve lost Lewis Morgan, who is irreplaceable really, but we need the manager to pull one out of the hat.
“We have worked so hard to get where we are so we don’t want to lose it. We’re stepping into the unknown a bit but we hope we can get off to a good start.”
The experienced midfielder is certainly impressed by the calibre of sides St Mirren will face this term, saying: “I feel our game is in a good state right now – maybe as good as it has ever been – so we’re excited to be part of it.”
First up in the league is a home clash with McGinn’s former club Dundee on Saturday. It’s 8/5 for a St Mirren victory, while McGinn is 7/1 to get on the scoresheet.
