A fans’ favourite during his last stint at Airdrieonians, Sean Crighton is back at the Excelsior Stadium this term. And the 28-year-old is now wearing the captain’s armband.

The new skipper spoke exclusively to us following Saturday’s stellar comeback win over Forfar Athletic, where Airdrie netted three times in the final 10 minutes in their Ladbrokes League 1 opener.

Crighton explained: ““We have 13 new boys in and the boys who stayed on from last season have seen a massive difference.”

He added: “It was tough last year with the changes at the club and I think the manager had a young group of boys and he club was just happy to stay up.”

But the experienced defender has much loftier goals this season, telling us: “There is a lot more experience in the squad and I think our ambitions are much higher.”

“The manager looked at the whole team and wanted to bring in guys who know the scene well and have that experience.”

“We know that Dumbarton and Raith will be favourites but I feel we have a squad that is capable of competing.”

The powerful centre-back is certainly happy to be back with the Diamonds, telling us: “When I was here before I loved it. The fans really took to me so when the opportunity arose to come back I was more than happy to do so.”
