Newcastle v Tottenham tips: Spurs can edge it at St James’ Park

St. James' Park - Newcastle

It’s déjà vu for Tottenham Hotspur, who begin the Premier League campaign with a trip to Newcastle United for the second successive year.

Mauricio Pochettino’s men won both meetings last season, including a 2-0 victory on Tyneside. Can they keep up that streak, or will they fall foul of a new-look Magpies side speared by newboy Salomon Rondon?

Match Odds

In the Match Betting, we make Tottenham even-money favourites for victory.

Meanwhile, it’s 23/10 for the Draw – something we haven’t seen between the sides since 2011. And victory for Newcastle is a tad longer at 27/10.

Six of the last eight head-to-heads have produced three or more goals, and it’s 19/20 for Over 2.5 Goals again. As for Spurs to Win and Both Teams to Score, that’s available at odds of 16/5.

Talking Tactics

The Magpies are likely to play with two up top, in a 4-4-2 system. Newboy Rondon is likely to pair Ayoze Perez up top, with Kenedy and Matt Ritchie on the flanks.

At centre-back, one or both of Fabian Schar and Federico Fernandez could make their debuts, while Ki Sung-yueng could have his bow in the heart of midfield.

By contrast, Spurs have had the quietest transfer window of any Prem club. Poch has added zero new faces, and there have been no first-teamers exiting the club.

With no shake-up in the side, they’re likely to go with the 4-3-2-1 they played for most of last season – including that 2-0 win on Tyneside. Expect Harry Kane up front, with Dele Alli slotting in behind to cause the Magpies problems.

Goalscorer Odds

Kane was unstoppable last season, and also has a good record against Newcastle – netting in three of the previous six clashes. The 25-year-old is 19/20 to Score Anytime.

Having broken the deadlock in 10 Prem games last season, he’s 11/4 to notch the opener in the North-East.

He’s the favourite to get amongst the goals, with Fernando Llorente next-best at 7/5 Anytime.

The hosts’ best chance of a goal lies in Rondon. The Venezuelan powerhouse netted against Spurs for West Bromwich Albion last season, and is 23/10 to get on the scoresheet this time around.
