Raith Rovers agonisingly missed out on promotion from Ladbrokes League 1 last term.

But the Kirkcaldy club could make good on their title hopes this term – as 15/8 favourites to go up as champions.

They’ve taken four points from the first two games. And ahead of Saturday’s trip to Airdrieonians, we spoke exclusively with captain Kyle Benedictus.

The 26-year-old told us: “It was such a difficult end to last season because we felt we were going to win it.”

“One week we were top and the next week Ayr were top and it went right down to the wire.”

“Being that close and going to the last game, it was hard for us to then rise again in the play-offs. We did still think we were going to do it in the play-offs but we came up short against Alloa and they deserved to go up.”

However, the centre-back has got over the heartbreak of last season and is positive about the year to come.

Benedictus said: “I think we have a really good squad and we’re capable of doing it this time.”

And he believes the Stark’s Park faithful can play a major part. He explained: “The fans have been unbelievable. We’re getting over 2,000 backing us at home and they can be the difference for us. Hopefully this year we can do it for them.”

However, he acknowledges that Raith will face a tough test if they are to win the title.

The skipper said: “We know it will be tough, Dumbarton and Arbroath will feel they can win it but we feel we can get promotion.”

Raith are 5/4 for victory in Airdrie on Saturday. Rovers have won each of the last two meetings by a 2-1 scoreline, and a repeat of that is priced at 8/1.
