Italian GP tips: Vettel can keep momentum going in Hamilton fight

Published:

After a comfortable victory in last weekend’s Belgian Grand Prix, Sebastian Vettel will be hoping for more of the same this Sunday in Italy.

The Ferrari ace will be looking to further close in on title rival Lewis Hamilton’s 17-point lead, in front of the Scuderia’s adoring tifosi.

But the Prancing Horse hasn’t won on home soil since 2010. Can the German bring back the glory days in Monza? Here’s your Italian Grand Prix preview…

Italian Grand Prix odds

Having proved too fast for Hamilton’s Mercedes at Spa, Vettel is the 5/6 favourite to win this weekend.

It’s widely accepted that Ferrari now have a better power unit than their German rivals, and Monza’s long straights should allow the Italian squad to demonstrate that, as they did in Belgium.

Comfortably outpaced last weekend, Hamilton reckons his Silver Arrows should be nearer the pace this time, however. He’s the 2/1 second favourite to win on Sunday.

Kimi Raikkonen again showed excellent speed last weekend, but rain and a first-lap incident ruined his chances of a first win since 2013. The Finn has never won the Italian GP, but 9/2 says he does so for the first time on Sunday.

Valtteri Bottas is the only other realistic contender for victory. Hamilton’s team-mate has endured plenty of misfortune this season, but is 10/1 to grab his first win of the year.

Alternative Italian GP markets

With Max Verstappen at 20/1 and Daniel Ricciardo 50/1, it’s unlikely that Red Bull will be in race-winning contention this weekend.

But the duo have managed to produce six fastest laps from the 13 races this season. It’s 2/1 that a Red Bull posts the quickest lap during Sunday’s race.

Further back, the Haas squad could be in line for a strong weekend. The American outfit go well on low-downforce circuits, as shown by their fourth and fifth-placed finishes in Austria earlier this year.

And with Ferrari’s ever-improving performance from their power unit, Haas could be in the top-six mix. Kevin Magnussen is 11/8 to grab his fifth top-six finish of 2018, with Romain Grosjean 13/8.
