Glorious Goodwood tips: Rhododendron to get back on track in Nassau

Published:

Day two of Glorious Goodwood was packed full of upsets with 9/1 Lightning Spear topping the pile in the Sussex Stakes.

However, Lil Rockerfeller steamed home in the first to nail the NAP and save our blushes. In today’s action, the Nassau Stakes is the feature race and looks hotly-contested.

As usual, we’re on hand to guide you through the seven renewals with some insight and tips.

NAP – Rhododendron – 3:35pm, Goodwood

Aidan O’Brien will have been sorely disappointed with his charge’s run in the Queen Anne Stakes at Royal Ascot back in June.

However, the four-year-old will be keen to put things right here in this 1m 2f renewal of the Nassau Stakes. And the step back up in trip should suit her plenty.

She’s a high-class operator and the small field here will be of benefit. And the daughter of Galileo also has a win over the course two years ago, too.

She’s going to be giving away weight to the three-year-olds. But if she runs anywhere near her Lockinge performance at Newbury, she’ll take all the beating.

NB – Marie’s Diamond – 3:00pm, Goodwood

There’s a case to be made for at least five in this renewal of the Richmond Stakes. But it’s Mark Johnston’s Marie’s Diamond who gets the nod from us.

The two-year-old is generally a very consistent type. And in a race this competitive, that could make the difference. The son of Footstepsinthesand has been steadily improving, too.

A win at Chester was followed up by a second and first in group company at the Curragh. And the former was a close defeat to O’Brien’s Van Beethoven.

Land Force, Konchek, and Neverland Rock will be his main opponents. But, at the very, least, he can hit the frame.

Lively Longshot – Maverick Officer – 1:50pm, Goodwood

The opening race of the day looks a decent opportunity to land a big price each-way winner in Maverick Officer.

David Simcock’s charge ran superbly well to win a class three handicap at Haydock back in June. It was a competitive field, too. And it sets the three-year-old son of Exceed and Excel up nicely for a decent run here.

The gelding shaped really well at Goodwood back in May to finish fourth. He’ll have to find a lot more with this step up in trip here. But at the prices, he’s in with a chance of a place.
