Glorious Goodwood tips: Beat The Bank to star in Sussex Stakes

If you’re a fan of backing hot favourites, day one of Glorious Goodwood certainly went your way.

Four jollies hosed up to make it a super day for the punters. And there could be more of the same on day two with a hotly-contested Sussex Stakes the big race of the day.

We preview the action and include three of our feature tips…

NAP – Lil Rockerfeller – 1:50pm, Goodwood

Neil King’s Lil Rockerfeller goes straight to the head of the betting for this renewal of the Goodwood Handicap.

The seven-year-old hurdler switches back to the flat and is two wins from four in this code. The one drawback is that he’s never raced at the Sussex Downs course before.

But he’s a classy sort and will be well able for this 2m 4f marathon. Plus, he races off a mark of 82 which will go mightily in his favour.

The bit of rain has taken the sting out of the ground and that will also go in his favour. One last point is that Silvestre Da Sousa is on-board and the Brazilian jockey is bang in form.

NB – Beat The Bank – 3:35pm, Goodwood

The feature race of the day looks an absolute cracker with a highly-competitive field that includes the ‘Duel of the Downs’ between Without Parole and Expert Eye.

However, there’s more than just those two in with a chance. Gustav Klimt and Lightning Spear will fancy their chances, too. But we’re giving Andrew Balding’s Beat The Bank the nod at much more enticing prices.

He’s got course and distance form over Goodwood and that’s massively important here with it being a specialist sort of track. It’s also something Without Parole lacks.

He was unlucky at Ascot in the Queen Anne Stakes, getting boxed in. But if he can keep pace with the Expert Eye and Without Parole and grab some room, he’s got a big chance.

Lively Longshot – Bartholomeu Dias – 2:25pm, Goodwood

Charles Hills’ charge was a bit naughty last time out in West Sussex after he tried to take a chunk out of Goodwood rival Dr Richard Kimble in the home stretch.

He was second that day and has been gelded since. So, obviously, our pick here is advised with caution. However, the three-year-old has got form over the course with a third-place finish to Masar last year in his first start.

Oisin Murphy – on board for his last win at Wolverhampton over the tapeta – rides again here. And if he can keep control of him, he could be in with a chance of hitting the frame.

Glorious Goodwood tips:

1:50 Goodwood – Lil Rockerfeller

2:25 Goodwood – Bartholomeu Dias e/w

3:00 Goodwood – Soldier’s Call

3:35 Goodwood – Beat The Bank

4:10 Goodwood – Welcoming

4:45 Goodwood – Twenty Times

5:55 Goodwood – Vale Of Kent
