Are Sunderland the team to beat in League One?

After two years of misery, Sunderland fans will be hoping to have something to cheer in League One this term.

After finishing bottom of the Premier League, then bottom of the Championship, this is a chance to regroup and change direction.

But can they live up to their tags as favourites?

The Black Cats lead the betting at 3/1 to top the table at the end of the season. They’re 10/11 to go up too.

It’s not too hard to see why our traders fancy them. The recent takeover has injected some optimism and they’ve cleared Jack Rodwell, John O’Shea and Darron Gibson from the wage bill.

If the likes of Lee Cattermole, Bryan Oviedo, Aiden McGeady and Didier Ndong stay and get their heads down, they should be well-stocked for the long season ahead.

New signing Charlie Wyke is 9/1 to be top goalscorer in the division. The Wearside club look to have sorted out their problems in goal too.  Jon McLaughlin should be more reliable than Robbin Ruiter, Jason Steel and Lee Camp.

The squad might be in relatively good shape, but new manager Jack Ross still has a big job to do.

It’s been a long time since the fans had any sort of hope. Sunderland have only won 18 league games over the last three seasons.

The former St Mirren boss will have to completely change the mood at the Stadium of Light. If he can do that, Sunderland look like very strong contenders.
