Tuesday at Wimbledon: Williams continues bid for eighth SW19 crown

After ‘manic Monday’ at Wimbledon, attention today turns to the women’s singles quarter-finals.

Seven-time champion Serena Williams is the headline act on centre court. She takes on unheralded Italian and world number 52 Camila Giorgi.

The 26-year-old is appearing in her first Grand Slam quarter-final and will have her work cut out against Williams, who has yet to drop a single set en route to this stage.

You can back the American at 1/5 outright. It’s 4/7 she chalks up her fifth successive straight sets victory.

Before that, though, it’s Angelique Kerber v Daria Kasatkina on the main court.

Despite being seeded 11 and 14 for the tournament respectively, the pair are two of the top four seeds left in the competition following a number of high-profile casualties.

The duo are locked together on three wins apiece from their last six head-to-head encounters.

Yet it was Kerber who triumphed when they last met at Eastbourne in June. It’s 1/2 for a repeat performance against 13/8 for Kasatkina to win through.

2017 French Open champion Jelena Ostapenko is also in action this afternoon. She takes on Johanna Konta’s conqueror, Dominika Cibulkova.

The dangerous Slovakian has disposed of two seeds to reach her third Wimbledon quarter-final since 2011.

But she’ll need to overcome Ostapenko for the very first time if she’s to progress towards a maiden semi-final berth at SW19.

Cibulkova is 11/10 to do just that, with her opponent the narrow favourite at 8/11.

The women’s quarter-finals conclude on court one with Kiki Bertens up against Julia Gorges.

Both players are in unchartered territory in South London having reached this stage at Wimbledon for the first time.

Dutch star Bertens has endured the more difficult route through and has impressed in victories over Venus Williams in the third round and Karolina Pliskova last time out.

She’s two from two against her opponent over the last two years, but our traders can’t separate the pair, marking them up at 10/11 apiece to progress through to a first semi-final appearance.

Elsewhere, Juan Martin Del Potro requires just one more set to see off Frenchman Gilles Simon in the last remaining fourth round match from the men’s singles.

That encounter should resume at around 1pm on court two, with Del Potro the 3/25 favourite to win through. Simon is available at 5/1 after picking up his first set to make it 2-1 yesterday evening.
