Why Cowdenbeath can shake off strugglers tag in Ladbrokes League 2

The last few seasons have been difficult ones for the loyal followers of Cowdenbeath.

However, having survived the pyramid play-off once again in May, there are finally signs of brighter times again…

Improving form

Despite remaining adrift at the bottom, last season didn’t end too badly. The play-off tussle with Cove Rangers was preceded by three wins in 10 games, including victory at Stenhousemuir.

And the Blue Brazil also pulled off a few draws against strong sides. But their opening result of this campaign has taken things up a notch.

Cowden pulled off a 2-0 League Cup triumph at Raith Rovers on Saturday. The Blue Brazil dominated possession and shots on target against the League 1 full-timers, in a well-deserved triumph.

New additions

That result is quite a statement of intent – and follows some excellent summer business by boss Gary Bollan.

Loanee Blair Malcolm impressed after arriving from Ross County in November, and the talented midfielder has now made his move to Central Park permanent.

Meanwhile, another former face has also returned. Striker Kris Renton hit double figures in League 2 for Cowden in 2016-17, and returns after a campaign in which he helped Alloa Athletic win promotion to the Championship.

However, the most impressive addition could be Jason Talbot. The experienced left-back was a key man for Port Vale in England’s League One, before successful stints with Livingston and Dunfermline Athletic.

Having played 26 times for the Pars in last season’s Championship campaign, snapping up the 32-year-old is quite the coup.

The gaffer

But the biggest thing of all could be holding onto Bollan. Having led both Livingston and Forfar Athletic up from this level, few managers have a finer record in League 2.

Next up for the Blue Brazil is a home League Cup clash with Inverness Caledonian Thistle. It’s 8/1 for a Cowden victory, with Bollan’s men 11/5 in the Double Chance.

Meanwhile, the odds make it 20/1 for Cowdenbeath to win League 2 in the coming campaign.
