Wayne Rooney causing a stir in MLS

Wayne Rooney’s move to DC United is arguably the biggest, most progressive signing for the league since David Beckham’s move to LA Galaxy in 2007.

When Rooney burst on to the Premier League scene 16 years ago comparisons were made with the blistering Brazilian striker Ronaldo.

A ‘Roonaldo 18’ shirt was donned by a fan at one match and from there a star was born.

Fast-forward 16 years and Rooney has gone to MLS after a glittering career for club and country.

We’ve had a look at his impact Stateside…

Coming in cold

The former Manchester United striker has joined mid-way through the MLS season.

DC sit rock-bottom of the Eastern conference. But are hoping Rooney can be the injection of quality they can pin their hopes on.

He came off the bench against Vancouver Whitecaps in his first game and made an instant contribution.

Rooney made his entrance in the 58th minute and layed on a pre-assist and set-up a goal of his own as his new team ran out 3-1 winners.

Reality check

His reward for making a telling impact against the Whitecaps was a start versus Atlanta United.

The Black and Red went down 3-1. It was a tough test, given Atlanta are leading the division.

However, Rooney was booked and was later dragged off in the 66th minute after wasting some good opportunities.

Rooney doesn’t strike the Wright chord

England’s record goalscorer had to watch on again as his third appearance for DC was overshadowed by Bradley Wright-Phillips.

Rooney could only look on from the bench as the New York Red Bulls forward notched his 100th MLS goal.

When the 31-year-old did make it on to the pitch he thought he’d won a penalty. Rooney was bundled over in the box by Red Bulls defender Tim Parker.

This was a more promising showing from Rooney though who looked lively all evening.

The ex-Man United man and his new team play host to Colorado Rapids on Saturday as they attempt to drag themselves up the league.
