Tuesday at Wimbledon: Konta and Edmund begin home challenge

Wimbledon began with a bang yesterday as Roger Federer and Serena Williams got their campaigns underway victoriously.
And there should be more of the same with another top line-up expected at SW19 for day two.
With Andy Murray absence, Johanna Konta and Kyle Edmund pick up the baton for the home crowd, and both begin their challenges this afternoon.
Konta, who reached the semi-finals 12 months ago, goes in the first round against unseeded Russian Natalia Vikhlyantseva.
She hasn’t been at her best this season, but Konta has shown an upturn in form in recent weeks. Our traders make her 1/5 favourite to win today. Vikhlyantseva is 7/2 to cause a surprise, but she has lost seven of her last eight matches.
As for Edmund, who has become British number one during Murray’s injury-enforced absence, he faces Australian world number 60 Alex Bolt.
The 23-year-old reached the semi-finals of the Australian Open in January, and is a comfortable 1/6 to commence his Wimbledon quest with a win.
Six other Britains are in action too. Naomi Broady has a huge task against reigning champion Garbine Muguruza on centre court. Broady is 10/1 to win, with Muguruza 1/20 favourite.
Heather Watson is scheduled to play later in the day, against Belgium’s Kirsten Flipkens. Watson has slipped to 111th in the world during a difficult 2018, but is 13/8 to secure a much-needed win.
Rafael Nadal is the headline name of the day, however. The two-time Wimbledon champion is a solid 1/50 to defeat 14/1 shot Dudi Sela.
Women’s number one Simona Halep is 1/10 to defeat Japan’s Kurumi Nara.
