League Two: Lincoln and Cowley to keep the fire burning

Published:

Lincoln City will be revving up for another chance to bag promotion this season after play-off heartbreak last term.

The Imps were beaten in the League Two semi-finals by Exeter City. But optimism is rife within the club that Danny Cowley’s squad have plenty in the tank to mount another promotion push. And so do our traders.

We’ve got the Imps as third favourites to win the league at 9/1. You can also back them for promotion at 2/1.

Cowley has been a revelation since taking over the club back in May 2016. The 39-year-old took Lincoln up from the National League and an incredible run to the FA Cup quarter-finals. And they followed that up with a play-off place last term.

Cowley and his management team haven’t rested on their laurels over the summer, either. The board have provided funds which has allowed them to snap up Barnet hotshot, John Akinde.

The 29-year-old striker scored 87 goals in just 166 appearances for the North-West London outfit. And if he can transfer that form to the Imps, then they could have a significant goal-getter on their hands.

And that’s not been the only addition. Cowley has also snapped up Notts County captain Michael O’Connor on a one-year deal. The defensive midfielder should allow the club’s talented attacking outlets to really come to the fore.

Plus, O’Connor will pair up with old teammate Lee Frecklington again. The pair last played at Rotherham United together and won back-to-back promotions while at the Millers.

However, the fixture list compiler hasn’t been overly kind ahead of the new season. It’s a tough start for the Lincolnshire outfit.

They open up their League Two campaign against recently-relegated Northampton Town. They then play Swindon (9th), Grimsby (18th), Bury (League One last season), Notts County (5th) and Exeter (4th).

The Imps are 21/10 to get this term off to winning start at Sixfields Stadium against Northampton. Would you be willing to bet against Cowley and his talented squad?
