F1 results: Hamilton fights back as Vettel claims British Grand Prix

Published:

It wasn’t the victory he craved, but second place for Lewis Hamilton at Sunday’s British Grand Prix may have felt like a win.

The four-time champion’s hopes of a fifth-successive home victory were dashed within seconds of the start as he was pitched into a spin by Ferrari’s Kimi Raikkonen.

Despite falling to last place, Hamilton’s Mercedes quickly waltzed into the top six, while a pair of late safety car appearances helped him finish second behind title rival Sebastian Vettel.

The German’s win saw him build an eight-point advantage in the standings with 10 of this season’s 21 races completed.

It’s been a thrilling title fight so far between the two quadruple champions, and our traders can barely call this season’s winner.

Hamilton is the slight favourite at 4/6, but Vettel is 6/5 after an excellent performance from the Italian outfit last weekend.

The pair are a good 50 points clear in the championship, with Hamilton’s team-mate Valtteri Bottas their nearest challenger in the betting at a lengthy 80/1.

There appears to be very little between Mercedes and Ferrari this season. It’s widely accepted that the German side have greater aerodynamic efficiency, but that the Italian powerplant is now the one to have.

After a gruelling triple-header across France, Austria and Britain, the next race is the German Grand Prix in two weeks’ time.

The short but speedy Hockenheimring usually produces a competitive weekend of racing, and Hamilton and Vettel go into round 11 as 13/8 joint-favourites.

Bottas is next up at 11/2, although Red Bull might fancy themselves next time out.

Silverstone’s long-straights and engine demands ruled them out of race-winning contention, but they should be closer to the front in Germany.

There’s 15/2 about Max Verstappen bagging his second win of the season, with Daniel Ricciardo 17/2 to grab his third.
