Could Gary Cahill fix Man Utd’s defensive issues?

Manchester United are expected to bring in a proven centre-back this summer to end their overreliance on David de Gea’s heroics in goal.

The club have been heavily linked with a move for Toby Alderweireld for months, but Tottenham Hotspur’s asking price may be too high for a player with only a year left on his contract.

Now Chelsea captain Gary Cahill has emerged as a potential option. The veteran lost his place in the Blues’ side for long spells last season.

He’s unlikely to feature more regularly under new boss Maurizio Sarri. Chelsea have been linked with the likes of Daniele Rugani and Jamaal Lascelles, which means the writing could be on the wall for Cahill.

Being reunited with Jose Mourinho at Old Trafford could appeal to the England international. The duo won the title together in 2014-15.

Mourinho will know that he can count on Cahill. As it stands, Eric Bailly is arguably the only centre-back in his current squad.

The 32-year-old is clearly not a long-term option, but if United want to invest in other positions, he could do a job for a year or two.

There’d be no adapting to the Premier League, he’s played at the highest level and he knows what it takes to win the title.

It may not be the most glamorous signing, but it could be a smart one.
