Chelsea eyeing double Serie A swoop

Chelsea are finally stepping up their pursuit for new players and will look to exploit Serie A again.

Much of the summer has been shrouded in confusion and controversy at Stamford Bridge, but it appears it’ll be a busy last week in West London.

New boss Maurizio Sarri has already signed Jorginho but will dip back into the Italian market after reportedly opening talks for Matias Vecino and with Juventus about potential deals.

It’s claimed the former Napoli head coach is ready to dispense with either Tiemoue Bakayoko or Danny Drinkwater and form a new-look midfield.

Vecino is very well known by Sarri after playing under him during a loan spell at Empoli in 2014/15.

The 26-year-old starred in Uruguay’s World Cup campaign and was equally key for Inter Milan last season. But the arrival of Radja Nainggolan and the potential signing of Arturo Vidal may drop him down the pecking order.

Nonetheless Vecino will be a trustworthy and calming presence alongside the creative Jorginho.

The next move on Sarri’s checklist is a centre-back.

Chelsea have a core group of young defenders including Andreas Christensen and Antonio Rudiger.

But the club want to give Sarri the best chance of improving on their fifth placed finish last season. By signings players he knows.

It looks as though the Italian manager will try and take advantage of Juventus’ move to re-sign Leonardo Bonucci.

The Old Lady are reportedly keen to bring their former captain back to Turin. This could mean a number of their centre-backs are made available.

Sarri has said Gary Cahill will have a part to play this season. But the futures of David Luiz and Kurt Zouma remain undecided.

A goalkeeper and a forward may yet arrive before the deadline on Thursday 9th August for Chelsea and it’s Serie A where the deals could be done.
