Smart signings can give Notts County the edge in League Two

Notts County narrowly missed out on promotion from League Two last season, after a play-off semi-final loss to Coventry City.

But the Magpies could well top the pile this time around, having secured a number of excellent signings already this summer.

Prolific hitman Kristian Dennis has arrived off the back of an impressive campaign with Chesterfield. Despite the Spireites dropping out of the EFL last term, Dennis netted 19 times in League Two – 40% of all the Derbyshire club’s goals.

He’s joined up front by Kane Hemmings. The 27-year-old fell out of favour at Oxford United, and was loaned out last term. But as his 21-goal haul in the Ladbrokes Premiership in 2015-16 proves, he’s got a natural eye for goal.

Meanwhile, powerful Manchester City youngster Will Patching has been bought with an eye on the future.

As for pacy full-back Andy Kellett, he’s featured in the Championship for Bolton Wanderers and Wigan Athletic, without looking out of place.

However, the biggest asset the Magpies have is probably still boss Kevin Nolan.

The one-time England international took over at Meadow Lane in January 2017 with the goal of saving the struggling Magpies from relegation. Less than 18 months later, he’d guided them to the play-offs.

County can also take confidence from the fact that few of last season’s relegated quartet from League One look ready to bounce back. Oldham Athletic are managerless, whilst Bury managed just one away win all season.

As it stands, Notts County are 9/1 to win League Two. That puts them second in the betting, behind 6/1 shots MK Dons.
