Shaqiri could be a very smart signing for Liverpool

Liverpool will have to rethink their transfer plans after their move for Nabil Fekir fell apart. But one player they should be able to bring in without too many issues is Stoke City’s Xherdan Shaqiri.

The Switzerland international has been heavily linked with a move to Anfield recently. He could prove to be a bargain – reports suggest the Potters’ relegation activated a £12m release clause.

Shaqiri wouldn’t be a guaranteed starter for Jurgen Klopp’s side but he’d add much-needed depth.

The Reds’ first-choice front three of Mohamed Salah, Sadio Mane and Roberto Firmino will cause problems for any side.

However, if any of the trio aren’t available, there’s a huge drop-off if Danny Ings or Dominic Solanke come into the starting XI.

Shaqiri can play on either flank. He’s got the speed to fit in Klopp’s attacking system. And he scored eight league goals and delivered seven assists while playing for a very poor side last term.

He’ll want to prove himself too. The 26-year-old had pretty underwhelming spells at Bayern Munich and Inter Milan before his move to Stoke. This is his chance to show he belongs at a big club.

Liverpool wouldn’t have to blow much of their budget on him either. They’d have the funds to bring in Shaqiri as well as an alternative to Fekir.

The Merseyside club have already wrapped up deals for Naby Keita and Fabinho. Add Shaqiri to that list and it has the makings of a very successful summer.
