3 reasons Premier League giants must up their pursuit of Gotze

It’s no secret that Mario Gotze is likely to leave Borussia Dortmund this summer. Having failed to secure a spot in Germany’s World Cup squad, the 26-year-old looks ready to say goodbye to his boyhood employers once again.

Premier League pair Arsenal and Liverpool have both been heavily linked with the BvB man in recent days. And there’s plenty of reason that both Unai Emery and Gotze’s former Dortmund boss Jurgen Klopp should make signing him a priority…

Versatility and creativity

While Liverpool did excellently to reach the Champions League final last season, there’s no doubt the January departure of Philippe Coutinho weakened them.

So adding a player who’s recorded 54 assists in 190 Bundesliga games would certainly help plug that gap in attacking midfield for the Reds.

That’s his preferred position, but he remains one of the most versatile players in Europe. Comfortable on either flank, as well as in a deeper midfield role, the Memmingen native has even been used as a striker on occasion.

For the time being, Mesut Ozil has the attacking midfield role sewn up at the Emirates. However, Gotze could prove vital on the flanks – an area where the Gunners have struggled since the departures of Theo Walcott and Alexis Sanchez.

Trophy winning experience on the big stage

Despite playing some fantastic football in recent years, trophies have been in short supply for Liverpool. The Reds have won just a solitary League Cup in the last 12 seasons.

As for Arsenal, their fans have grown frustrated by talented sides whose title challenges have continually petered out.

Gotze has vital trophy-winning experience, including a whopping five Bundesliga winners’ medals. That’s in addition to four cup triumphs in Germany, and of course a World Cup title with the national side in 2014.

But it’s not just that Gotze’s been involved. Time and again, he’s been the difference-maker both of those Prem sides have lacked at key junctures.

From netting the winner in the World Cup final, to scoring a raft of crucial goals in various title run-ins, he’s built a career on being the man for the big occasion.

He’s got a point to prove

As any football fan knows, there’s nothing more effective than a player looking to prove a point. From showing a former club what they’re missing, or proving your worth to a new manager – it brings out the best in them.

Gotze will desperate to recover his best form – and restore his reputation – in the coming campaign.

As well as missing out on a place at the World Cup this summer (despite his 2014 heroics), the 26-year-old found himself in the unusual position of being dropped for several of Dortmund’s games in the closing weeks of the campaign.

Whether he’s off to Anfield, the Emirates or elsewhere this summer, whoever gets their hands on Gotze will have done a fine bit of business.
