What would Unai Emery bring to the Arsenal job?

It had seemed a matter of time before Mikel Arteta got the Arsenal job, but Unai Emery now appears to be in the driving seat.

The Spaniard left Paris Saint-Germain this summer after two years in charge. He won five major trophies during his time in France, following on from three successive Europa League triumphs while at Sevilla.

We’ve taken a look at what he could bring to the Gunners…

Tactical tweaks

For all of Arsene Wenger’s qualities, he wasn’t much of a tactician. His side rarely adapted to the opposition. And that often cost them in big games.

In contrast, Emery works tirelessly to prepare videos that show his players where they can hurt their opponents.

He’ll also work to address Arsenal’s long-standing flaws at the back. The likes of Granit Xhaka and Shkodran Mustafi may not be world-class players, but they’re constantly left exposed and forced into desperate challenges.

Emery will give the team a proper structure. Although the football may not be as sparkling as it often was under Wenger.

Cup specialist

As it stands, Arsenal are a 25/1 shot to win the Premier League next season. They finished a massive 37 points behind champions Manchester City last term.

Whoever comes in, it’s unrealistic to expect a title push straight away. A top-four spot will be the target.

But Emery could see them make real progress in the cup competitions. He may have failed to win the league during his first season in Paris, but he won both domestic cups in each of his two seasons.

With so much competition for the top four, the Europa League offers another route to Champions League qualification too. No one knows how to mastermind a winning campaign in that competition better than the 46-year-old.

Focus on youth

Arsenal can’t compete with the likes of Manchester City and Manchester United when it comes to transfer fees.

The appointment of former Borussia Dortmund transfer guru Sven Mislintat suggests they’ll focus on trying to find young diamonds rather than ready-made superstars.

Emery worked well under a similar model at Sevilla, where he brought young players into a very impressive team.

Even players already at the club could benefit. The likes of Hector Bellerin and Alex Iwobi have stalled in their progress lately. The way Adrien Rabiot and Presnel Kimpembe developed under Emery at PSG offers very encouraging signs.
