Ladbrokes News’ Premier League Team of the Year

Another great Premier League season came to a close on Sunday. We’ve seen some incredible football over the last 10 months. But who really stood out from the crowd?

Who are the players you always want to watch? The ones who deliver week in, week out? Here’s our Premier League Team of the Season…

Goalkeeper: David de Gea

De Gea narrowly gets the nod between the posts ahead of Ederson. It’s been another sensational season from the Spaniard. He’s been busier for Manchester United than he would have liked but he comes to his team’s rescue again and again.

Right-back: Kyle Walker

Eyebrows were raised when City bought Walker for £50m last summer. Not many people are questioning the move now. Walker’s pace has been a very important weapon for the champions.

Centre-back: Nicolas Otamendi

Remember when Otamendi looked like a liability? Not anymore. The Argentine helped City to the best defensive record in the division. Pep  Guardiola will have been very impressed with his improvement on the ball too.

Centre-back: Jan Vertonghen

Toby Alderweireld has fallen out of favour at Tottenham Hotspur in recent months. Most sides would struggle without a defender of that quality. Jan Vertonghen’s presence has meant that it hasn’t had much of an impact at Spurs.

Left-back: Andrew Robertson

It took Andrew Robinson a while to find his feet at Liverpool. But it was more than worth the wait. The former Hull City defender’s dangerous crosses are a constant menace for opposition sides.

Defensive midfield: Fernandinho

City have more eye-catching players than Fernandinho but few as important. The Brazil international’s ability to win possession and then start attacks quickly helped his team to stay on the front foot.

Centre midfield: Kevin De Bruyne

The driving force behind City’s title win. The 26-year-old scored goals, made plenty more and ran games with his intelligence and athleticism.

Centre midfield: David Silva

A lot of teams thought their best option against City was to sit deep and try to keep things tight. But their resident magician was usually able to pick the lock. Silva must go down as one of the best playmakers the Premier League has seen.

Right wing: Mohamed Salah

Salah wanted to prove he could cut it in English football following his move to Liverpool. He’s certainly done that. The Egyptian has lit up the top flight with a record haul of 32 goals. His season could still get even better – Liverpool are 2/1 to beat Real Madrid in the Champions League final.

Left wing: Raheem Sterling

If anyone sums up Guardiola’s impact in Manchester, it may be Raheem Sterling. He’s always been talented but he’s reached another level this term. A return of 18 goals and 11 assists show why the winger will be key for England this summer.

Striker: Harry Kane

There aren’t many more dangerous strikers anywhere than Harry Kane. He didn’t get a third consecutive Golden Boot this term, but 30 league goals is his best return yet. It’s even more impressive considering he made a slow start and struggled with injury.
