Hamilton doubles up in Barcelona to win Spanish GP

Lewis Hamilton extended his championship lead to 17 points with a commanding win in Sunday’s Spanish Grand Prix.

The 33-year-old dominated the race in Barcelona, cruising to victory after claiming his 74^th pole position on Saturday.

Hamilton’s win, his second in succession, strengthens his grip in the title race after rival Sebastian Vettel finished fourth.

The German never threatened his Mercedes opponent, and a late pit stop dropped the four-time champion from second.

Valtteri Bottas took that spot to give Mercedes their first 1-2 result of the season, with Max Verstappen bagging his first podium of the campaign in third.

Hamilton is now 1/2 favourite to win a fifth title this season, with Vettel pushed to 7/4.

By his own admission, Hamilton had underperformed in the early rounds of the campaign, so he will have been relieved to produce such a commanding performance this weekend.

But he can’t afford to ease off, with the Monaco Grand Prix next up in a fortnight’s time.

Both Hamilton and Vettel have won the famous event twice before.

Our odds have Ferrari’s star driver as slight 13/8 favourite however. The red cars were uncatchable around the principality a year ago.

Hamilton is 7/4 to make it a hat-trick next time out, before Red Bull’s Daniel Ricciardo at 11/2.

Verstappen is 6/1, with Bottas 8/1 and last year’s pole position man Kimi Raikkonen 14/1.
