Sale shopping: Which relegated Premier League stars could be on the move?

The end of the season is nigh, and before you know it the summer transfer window will be open.

And that means the three relegated Premier League sides will spend weeks fending off their top talents.

Nothing is confirmed yet, but let’s assume the trio currently in the drop zone, Southampton, Stoke City and West Bromwich Albion, end up going down this season.

The Ladbrokes News crew have looked at all three sides and picked out the players most likely to court attention this summer…

Southampton

Ryan Bertrand

Full-backs are de rigueur these days, and Ryan Bertrand fits the bill nicely and is proven Premier League pedigree.

The left-back is valued at £18m, and wouldn’t be the cheapest option in town, but is he likely to want to a season in the Championship and hinder his England chances?

Mario Lemina

It’s highly unlikely that when Mario Lemina left Juventus for Southampton, that he envisaged playing Championship football just a year later.

The 24-year-old was frequently in the first-team at both Marseille and Juve, so it’s hard to see him sticking it out in England’s second-tier.

Oriol Romeu

Much like full-backs, no side will achieve anything these days without a quality holding man.

Oriol Romeu has played for Barcelona and Chelsea, so the second-tier would be a come down. But at 26-years-old he’s already a seasoned Premier League pro, so expect the bids to come in.

Charlie Austin

Already struggling to oust Shane Long and Manolo Gabbiadini, Charlie Austin could well be upping sticks this summer.

The striker is proven in the Premier League, move so than his Gabbiadini, and he’s three-years younger than Long, making him the ideal signing of this Saints’ trio.

Nathan Redmond

Like his colleague Bertrand, Nathan Redmond’s best chance of staying in the England frame is to stay in the Premier League.

The winger is versatile and has impressed in the top-flight on numerous occasions. He’s 24-years-old, and can’t afford to spend his best years in the Championship.

Stoke City

Jack Butland

Jack Butland has done what he can for Stoke City this season, but ultimately it could be to no avail.

But he’s done his own reputation wonders, and has been linked with several top sides, including Liverpool. Butland is another who will need to stay at the top to maintain his England challenge.

Ryan Shawcross

A solid no-nonsense Premier League centre-half isn’t that common nowadays, but Ryan Shawcross knows his way around.

The Stoke City skipper has bags of experience, and statistics show is one of the best defenders going. May well stay put in Staffordshire but would be an ideal signing for many bottom-half Prem sides.

Joe Allen

Welshman Joe Allen won’t be at the World Cup, but he may have a busy summer nonetheless. The Stoke City ace is one of the club’s prized assets, valued at £16.2m.

Didn’t quite make the grade at Liverpool but is unquestionably Premier League quality. Swansea City and West Ham United seem like likely contenders for the 28-year-old.

Xherdan Shaqiri

Former Bayern Munich and Inter Milan ace Xherdan Shaqiri playing in the Championship? Not happening.

The Switzerland star has spoken of his ambition to keep playing at a higher level, and at 26-years-old, his best years should still be to come.

Has already been linked with a reunion with Marko Arnautovic at West Ham.

Eric Choupo-Moting

Nobody will be signing Eric Choupo-Moting for his goalscoring prowess. But instead, the German-born Cameroonian offers much more.

Much of Stoke’s good (albeit rare) work this season has involved the 6ft 3in striker and his fine ability to link up with others and bring team-mates into the game. Would be a handy signing for a number of Prem sides.

West Bromwich Albion

Salomon Rondon

West Brom striker Salomon Rondon has been one of their best players this season. But the striker has had little chances to with work.

He’s plenty capable in the top-tier, and offers bags of pace and energy, but is out of contract in 2019 too, so the Baggies may well cash in. He won’t be going for the £38m touted around last summer, though.

Jonny Evans

West Brom were fortunate to keep hold of Jonny Evans in January, as Arsenal and Manchester City lurked.

But now the Baggies are surely set to lose their skipper. Evans is a multiple Premier League-winner, and it should be another five or six years before the 30-year-old is even contemplating dropping down a division.

Craig Dawson

Versatile defender Craig Dawson never courts the headlines, but he consistently puts in the performances for the Baggies.

The 26-year-old can play right-back or centre-half, and at 27-years-old will want to enjoy his peak years at the top.

Rochdale-born Dawson could be eyeing a move north, and Burnley have been linked with a deal which makes sense for all parties.

Matt Phillips

This looks like being the third time Matt Phillips will suffer Premier League relegation.

But the 27-year-old winger has proven a handful in the top-flight, especially last season. He’d be cheap too – the Baggies only paid £5m for him in 2016, and he’s halfway through a four-year deal.

Oli Burke

Oliver Burke arguably joined West Brom at the wrong time last summer. He’s hardly been given a look-in this season. Clubs will rarely turn to youth in a relegation fight, or when managers come and go.

But he’s still only 21-years-old and he has already commanded £27m in transfer fees. He was hyped up for a reason, a move this summer could be his chance to show it and kick-start his career.
