Mick McCarthy and Derek McInnes most popular picks for West Brom job

Mick McCarthy

Mick McCarthy is the punters’ choice to be named the next West Bromwich Albion manager.

The Ipswich Town boss has been backed alongside Aberdeen chief Derek McInnes for the vacant Hawthorns hot seat.

Our traders can report that 70% of bets taken on the Baggies job have been for the wanted pair.

McCarthy is considered the more likely candidate at 3/1 thanks to his reputation for success in England’s second-tier.

The Yorkshireman has done a fine job on a limited budget with Ipswich, which will appeal to the Baggies’ owners as they look to shore up the club financially.

He has also previously guided Sunderland and Wolverhampton Wanderers to promotion from the Championship after relegation from the Premier League.

McInnes, on the other hand, remains available at a lengthy 10/1.

The Scotsman has not managed in England since an ill-fated spell with Bristol City came to an end in 2013.

He was sounded out for the Sunderland job following the departure of David Moyes last year, but the role was eventually given to Simon Grayson.

Michael Appleton is the current favourite for the job at 7/4.

Former Leicester City boss Craig Shakespeare is also in the running at 10/1, as is Ostersunds manager Graham Potter at 14/1.

Baggies hero Kevin Phillips can be backed at 20/1 to take his first managerial role.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “It looks as though a decision won’t be made until the summer, but Mick McCarthy is the name on everyone’s lips right now and he’s firmly among the frontrunners to take over at The Hawthorns.”
