ITV Racing Tips: Chelsea Lad and Tabarrak backed for Donny double

Published:
Lincoln Handicap

Billed as the traditional curtain-raiser to the new flat season, the Lincoln Handicap from Doncaster is the feature race on ITV this weekend.

The last seven winners of the renewal have all come at a double-figure price. So we’ve looked down the 22-strong field to try and find some value on Saturday afternoon.

With three jump races pencilled in at Newbury as well, there’s something for everyone, no matter what your racing persuasion!

Check out our tips for all of the day’s ITV Racing below…

NAP – Tabarrak – 3:00 Doncaster

There’s not a great deal of impressive form to choose from in this six-runner Listed contest. So it should pay to stick with previous Listed winner and Group 3 runner-up, Tabarrak.

Richard Hannon’s charge easily has the best form on offer for the 1m contest and will be partnered by 2016 Champion Jockey Jim Crowley.

The selection will carry 3lb more than his rivals but that shouldn’t be a worry for the classy five-year-old. He’ll be ridden patiently and is backed to justify favouritism.

NB – Dawson City – 2:05 Newbury (each-way)

Stamina is the order of the day in this 3m 2f Handicap Chase over soft ground. And with that in mind, it’s Dawson City who gets the call.

Polly Grundy’s runner slugged it out with the fancied Thomas Patrick over 3m 6f last time out at Exeter and came out on top by over 20l from the jolly, who finished fourth.

The six-year-old is available at a handy price for this one. Especially when you take into account that he’s hit the frame in eight of his last nine attempts on soft ground.

Lively Longshot – Chelsea Lad – 3:35 Doncaster (each-way)

We nailed our colours to Chelsea Lad earlier in the week and our opinion hasn’t changed since.

The son of Clodovil ended last season with some impressive form in big runner handicaps and has gone close at Doncaster twice before.

No win since 2016 could prove a black mark against his name.

But with victors of this race returning prices of 20/1, 12/1, 12/1, 20/1 and 20/1 in the last five years, evidence shows it doesn’t always pay to back the form horse.

Martyn Meade’s star has shown good form over this distance before and with the ground on his side can cause a shock on each-way terms.
