Germany and Spain are the two most popular selections to win this summer’s World Cup.

The reigning world champions are just ahead in the betting stakes to go all the way in Russia.

Germany are the 9/2 favourites to win a second successive world crown, having seen off Argentina in Brazil four years ago.

Brazil are next up at 5/1, with France well-fancied at 11/2 to repeat their 1998 success.

Spain are the second-most popular choice in terms of number of bets placed, but they’re fourth in the odds at 13/2.

Alex Apati of Ladbrokes said: “Germany have been the most popular pick with punters for the World Cup since the final whistle was blown in Brazil four years ago. And if bets placed are anything to go by, they’ll come face-to-face with their nearest challengers tonight.”
