Champions League round-up: Man City & Liverpool shine

Published:

The Champions League knockout stages returned in superb fashion this week.

Tuesday and Wednesday’s fixtures produced 17 goals between them, and a heap of drama along the way.

It was an excellent week in particular for the three English sides involved, Tottenham Hotspur, Manchester City and Liverpool.

Here’s your Champions League round-up…

Premier League prowess

Between them, Man City, Tottenham and Liverpool scored 11 goals this week.

That’s impressive in itself, but to do so in the Champions League knockout stages – and all away from home – is a superb return.

Spurs fought back from 2-0 down to claim a 2-2 draw against Juventus in Turin.

The Italian giants had conceded once in their previous 16 games, but goals from Harry Kane and Christian Eriksen have given Mauricio Pochettino’s men the upper hand.

Pep Guardiola saw his Citizens go 3-0 up inside 23 minutes away at Basel, eventually prevailing 4-0.

And Liverpool raised the bar further on Wednesday night with Sadio Mane grabbing a hat-trick en-route to a 5-0 thrashing of Porto.

Problems for PSG in Madrid

For the second year in succession, Paris Saint-Germain came unstuck in Spain.

The French giants – reportedly the most expensive squad in the world – took a 1-0 lead against Real Madrid on Wednesday night.

Cristiano Ronaldo is not a man to be kept out of the limelight, however. The Portuguese star equalised on the stroke of half-time.

And substitute Marco Asensio turned the tie on its head with a pair of assists late on, one for Ronaldo and another for Marcelo.

Will PSG stumble in Europe yet again? And will that increase the chances of Neymar cutting short his stay in France?
